What is a plant?

What is a plant?

Anything that is alive and isn't an animal is a plant.
Unlike animals, most plants stay in one place. They don't walk, swim, or fly.
Most plants have green leaves. In them is the chemical chlorophyll,
which gives the leaves their green color.   A few plants with chlorophyll don't have green leaves.
They have red, purple, or brown leaves instead. Any plant that has chlorophyll is called a green
plant even if no green shows on its leaves. Green plants make their own food. Other plants don't.
Instead, they take their food from animals or other plants. Non-green plants may be completely brown,,
white, or even red.

How many kinds of plants are there?

There are about 350,000 different kinds of plants on Earth. They come in all sizes.
Some are so tiny that you can see them only under a microscope. others are so large
that they tower hundreds of feet above the ground. In fact, the tallest living thing is a plant -
The giant redwood tree. It can grow as high as 300 feet (90 meters).

Plants have many different shapes too. A blade of grass is long and skinny.
A palm tree has large leaves and a long trunk. A cabbage is around and lift.
A mushroom is a shaped like an umbrella.  a cactus is usually narrow with sharp spines.
